Driver Safety – Vehicle Inspection

These are the minimum requirements, please follow your company policy.

1.  Does the driver have the applicable qualification to operate the equipment being used (e.g. CDL, endorsements, driver’s license, DOT Medical Card)?
2.  Are the driver’s logs current, if applicable?
3.  Are Daily Vehicle Inspection Reports (DVIR) current?
4.  Is the vehicle labeled per DOT requirements, if applicable?
5. Are emergency reflectors in the vehicle?
6. Is the vehicle interior/exterior maintained properly?
7. Is there any interior or exterior damage?
8. Is the windshield in good condition?
9. Are the tires in good condition?
10. Is the fire extinguisher inspected and the location identified?
11. Is a compliant first aid kit located in the vehicle?
12. Are all state & federal inspection stickers current?
13. Are the insurance and registration certificates current and readily available?
14. Are all exterior lights in operational condition? (truck and trailer)
15. Are trailer breakaway harnesses properly functioning, if applicable?
16. Are trailer safety chains properly installed, if applicable?
17. Is material/cargo secured in accordance with DOT regulations, if applicable?
18. Are all fuel containers approved, stored and marked, if applicable?

Vehicle inspections should be conducted per company policy but at minimum an inspection should be conducted prior to and post use.
