Dropped Objects Prevention in Telecommunications
Why It Matters
Dropped objects are a leading cause of injury and property damage in the telecom and construction industries. Even small items—like bolts or nuts—can cause serious harm when dropped from height. These incidents are preventable with the right systems, training, and gear.
Common Causes of Dropped Objects
· Unsecured hand tools, hardware, or personal items
· Wind dislodging items from platforms or pouches
· Equipment slipping from holsters or buckets
· Poor housekeeping at elevation
· Improper tethering or rigging
· Overloaded or incompatible tether systems
Key Standard
ANSI/ISEA 121-2018 — Defines design and performance standards for dropped object prevention products like: – Tool tethers – Anchor attachments – Transport containers – Hoist buckets. Products should be rated to ANSI/ISEA 121-2018 and regularly inspected.
Prevention Strategy
1. Engineering Controls – Use tether-ready tools and containers. Select ANSI/ISEA 121-rated tethers and buckets. Use shock-absorbing tethers for tools over 3 lbs. Recommended best practice is anchoring tools >5 lbs. to structures, not your body. Avoid modifying tools; use manufactured retrofit attachments.
2. Administrative Controls – Conduct daily Job Hazard Assessments (JHAs) – Establish drop zones with signage and tape/flagging. Assign a Ground Safety Monitor. Develop a housekeeping policy.
3. Safe Work Practices – Utilize housekeeping best practices including maintaining clean platforms and no loose gear. Never toss tools at height. Store items in secure, closed containers. Inspect tethers and attachments daily. Limit tether length to avoid trip or entanglement hazards. Never intentionally toss or throw objects off a structure.
Special Reminders
· Tool anchorage must be independent of personal fall arrest systems.
· Avoid attaching tethers to unapproved anchorages.
· Match tools to proper tethers, anchors, and buckets following manufacturer’s guidelines.
Training and Compliance
Train all workers exposed to drop hazards
- Include procedures and system use
Retrain after:
- Changes in equipment and/or standards
- When workers demonstrate a lack of understanding
- If safety incidents occur.
Document training per ANSI/ASSP Z490
