MEWP – Personnel Lifting
This is for employees who use aerial lifts and/or scissor lift devices. For any equipment in use, an employee would need training on the following:
- OSHA Relations
- Types of MEWPs
- Selecting the Correct MEWP
- Inspections
- Safety Procedures for the MEWP
- Site Specific Procedures
- Fall Protection
- Shut Down Procedures
Training records shall be maintained for at least 4 years. Required information includes:
- Name of Employee
- Name of Trainer
- Training Covered
- Date of Training & Expiration
Safety Procedures for MEWP
- A pre-operational safety inspection shall be performed and documented before use.
- MEWPs are equipped with manufacturer safety features that shall never be removed, bypassed, or disconnected unless approved by the manufacturer.
- Only authorized and/or trained persons shall operate the MEWP.
- Employees shall always stand firmly on the floor of the MEWP.
- The operator shall know the total load in the MEWP.
- MEWPs shall never be used as cranes.
- Before the MEWP is moved all employees shall be made aware of movement.
Site Specific Safety Procedures
- Never move the MEWP while the platform is elevated unless specified by the manufacturer.
- Use outriggers per the manufacturer’s recommendation.
- Ground personnel shall be used when traveling from one area to another on the site.
- Pre-Inspect the work area before operating the MEWP, look for any underground utilities.
- 100% Fall Protection shall be maintained when transitioning from an elevated MEWP.
